How to Forge an Axe

Blades are tricky. The initial shaping can be time-consuming since you're using higher carbon steel. Then there's the tempering and hardening. Add to that a little forge-welding and you've got your weekend blocked off.

Let's take some of the mystery out of the process.

In the video tutorial that follows, John Neeman of Autine Tools will take you through the steps of forging an axe. He is by far one of our favorite blacksmiths. His eye for symmetry, form, and function is hard to beat.

Enjoy!

  1. Without a doubt, this is the sole video that got me into axe forging. This is my favorite how-to-video.

He makes it look so easy, too. A power hammer does make it easier, but this is so tough. Getting that eye center is a nightmare, if you go through at an angle or are off center, it's a pain in the butt to correct... but the finished product is oh-so-sweet. I haven't done the slit, flux, and weld a scarfed carbon bit in yet. I've done a carbon over lay like they used to do in New England. Fun to try new techniques.

Terran, mind if I share this on post on my blog?
